I've always said... "If you want to know American history, talk to a newly minted, naturalized American."
The same goes for the meaning of freedom... talk to those who have been deprived of its blessings.
If US history teachers are not at this very moment using the bright example of the heroic Iraqi people as a wonderful lesson of liberty, they are derelict in their duty; it's the most important teaching aid since the fall of the Berlin Wall.
I won't hold my breath.
Despite a religious and culturally fractured populace, murderous attacks by sub-humans and at the very risk of life and limb, the Iraqis turned out in numbers that should embarrass Americans.
Many Iraqis here in Colorado drove 1,000 miles to LA not once, but twice... once to register and again to vote. Millions of American eligibles wouldn't get up early to mail an absentee ballot.
Liberals/"progressives"/democrats in Ohio and Florida can't seem to figure out a ballot featuring only two candidates... by the Iraqis seemed to have no trouble with a multi-page ballot that looked like a Chinese restaurant menu.
Election officials, battalions of lawyers and lawsuits can't seem to stop dead people from voting in the US of A, but the savvy citizens of Iraq seemed to solve the problem with colored ink. The ink-stained index finger is more than that... it's an instant symbol of defiance.
Of course Chris Matthews, host of a TV show no one watches, could only fret about how the stained fingers could mark the voters for retaliation.
Meanwhile many of the Sunday talking heads shows featured the usual nay-saying suspects and Russert had the dem's leading has-been, Jean Fransois Kerry, proving once more he can remain on the wrong side of history no matter what.
I'm waiting for Algore and the Congressional Black Caucus to demand a recount in Baghdad.
The left in this country is so used to treating blacks, Hispanics and women as retarded political wards, it was natural they would insist Iraqis couldn't handle democracy; the election was another nail in the coffin of the dem party. And for good measure the party has sent out Massachusetts swim coach, Ted Kennedy, Kerry and Joltin' Joe Biden as the voice and the face of the party. It also looks like Howie Dean will head up the DNC.
It's over, the dems have forfeited any significant political power for the next 25 years.
And worst of all for the lefties... George Bush has notched a huge victory in his foreign policy, the history of both this country and Iraq and has set in motion the democratization of the Middle East.
Voting day in Iraq proved the war has been won... not over, but won.
It's ironic... to have more in common with an Iraqi Shiite a half a world away than the guy who lives across the street from me.
