I advise you to get some duct tape and wrap it around you head to prevent your head from exploding if you've not read the following:
It seems that Gallaudet University students have stormed the Bastille and ousted the school's president Jane Fernandes, Ph.D., on the grounds that she is not deaf enough. That's right... the students of America's only deaf liberal arts university (take that as you will) feel their "community" suffered an affront because only the second deaf president since its founding during the Civil War, didn't learn to sign until she was in her 20s and got through public schools by lip reading.
Her parents chose to educate her in an oral education program which focused on teaching her to speak, and rejected the use of sign language. As an adult she made the difficult decision to learn American Sign Language (ASL) in order to more completely involve herself in the deaf community.
A former GU provost, Dr. Fernandes, who was to take office in January, was opposed by many Gallaudet students, alumni and faculty on the same ridiculous grounds that those afflicted with ghetto-think use... "she actin' white" or "she's light skinned, and so she can pass." This professional educator, without benefit of one of her five sense, overcame far more obstacles than these wet-behind-the-ears-whiners ever will.
Campus radicals demanded Fernandes' resignation because she favored disciplining students for damaging university property during campus unrest and for ending a remedial education program which radicals believed separated "students of color" from white students. About two weeks ago the out-going president ordered the mass arrest of campus protesters who rioted against Fernandes' selection as president; this action in turn sparked even larger demonstrations.
Gallaudet is an institution in deep trouble for its less-than 50 percent graduation rate and precipitous drop in enrollment despite receiving more than $100 million yearly funding from your tax dollars (the lion's share of its entire annual budget). For these unacceptable failures, and in classic bureaucratic understatement, it has been rated "ineffective" by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget.
Dr. Fernandes was desperately trying to address these failures, and for that she has been hounded from the university she loved, by many of the very students who probably won't graduate anyway.
You think all this is ridiculous? The "deaf community" insanity vein runs far deeper. The militant deaf insist that the lack of hearing is not a disability... it's just different... part of "deaf culture", and as such must be respected and above all, never offended; offended by such medical breakthroughs as cochlear implants which allow some deaf to regain their hearing.
This profound medical miracle is shunned by radicals of the "non-hearing community" as not politically correct by any means. Heather Whitestone McCallum, the first deaf Miss America, for example, has the devices in both ears... for this offensive act she did not go over well at Gallaudet.
So the "deaf community" has embarked on the same pathetic path to destruction that was pioneered by most latter day diversity movements... focusing on their differences, and refusing to assimilate while insisting that they are a special and should be given special rights... and your money.
Ironic isn't it then that the pathetic drop-out rate of Gallaudet students is approximately that of blacks and Hispanics in high school.
"I am deaf,
hear see me roar!!"
I get sick of paying for failure, especially that which is produced by the sacred cow of American public education.... you wanna be successful, or you wanna grow up and be a "civil rights" worker, lawyer, activist, preacher"; you wanna major in "studies"... womens', black, latino (sic), lesbian, or deaf... then do so on your own, without my tax dollars. Why should I underwrite your suicidal approach to an education and career?
I hear MacDonald's is hiring.
